During the last few years I have been visiting Bali which has been a source of inspiration for artists from many nations since the 1930's. The unique and inspiring culture of Bali once existed throughout present day Indonesia and beyond for more than two hundred years. The Majapahit empire finally fell to Muslim fanatics about five hundred years ago, and Javanese aristocracy sough refuge in Bali, bringing with them Hindu religion literature and arts. Balinese culture and the ambience of the island's extraordinary natural beauty make it an excellent place to paint.
The Balinese energetically maintain a wonderfully rich and resilient cultural heritage despite colonial intrusions, ever increasing immigration and tourism not to mention the still recent atrocities of fundamentalism. However, the long term future of Bali, plagued with over-development and traffic jams, remains uncertain.
